A teacher and author has had to come to her defense after suggesting that parents should get their newborns’ consent before changing their diapers.
The controversial statement was made by sexuality expert Deanne Carson during an ABC News story on consent laws.
The expert’s recommendation? “Set up a culture of consent” from the get-go. Saying something like, “I’m going to change your nappy now, is that OK?” is an example of this method.
She said that there are other methods for a baby to express permission, even if they won’t be able to speak:
“But if you leave a space and wait for body language and wait to make eye contact then you’re letting that child know that their response matters.”
