Phil Mickelson, a three-time winner of the Masters Tournament, unexpectedly endorsed Daniel Penny, a guy on trial in New York City for fatally subduing a man on the subway.
Since the early 1990s, Mickelson has been a consistent player on the PGA Tour (and later the LIV Tour).
At the age of 54, “Lefty” has begun to speak out more and more, sharing political anecdotes while still keeping a low profile in public.
Just hours before a manslaughter charge against Mickelson was withdrawn on Friday due to the jury’s inability to reach a verdict, Mickelson delivered a statement about Penny.
According to a post on X, Penny is “a model citizen who should be praised by the city of New York.” The golfer was replying to that post.
Additionally, the article said that Penny “is the person you hope is around if your loved ones’ lives are being threatened” before referring to him as a “hero.”
