Once again, a’megaberg’ weighing 1,000,000,000 tons and thought to be twice the size of London is in motion.
The enormous iceberg, which scientists refer to as A23a, first broke off from the Antarctic coast in 1986 and, because of its size, spent the next 30 years stuck under the Weddell Sea seabed.
However, after unmooring from the bottom, A23a was subsequently seen traveling north in 2020. After being caught in a vortex back in the spring, the massive iceberg would become stranded once again early this year.
The ‘Taylor Column’ vortex, which happens when revolving water holds an item in place, is what caused the 1,000,000,000-ton block of ice to spin aimlessly in the frigid sea for many months.
However, given that the iceberg has already broken free once again and is once again floating over the Southern Ocean, it would seem that A23a is nothing if not determined.
