The Parliament of South Korea votes to remove President Yoon Suk Yeol from office due to his imposition of martial law.

 

His martial rule order before the Constitutional Court. Yoon’s popularity rating was 11% in a poll published Friday, the lowest since he assumed office in 2022.

Some military officers who testified that their men were sent to the Assembly disagree with some of Yoon’s assertions. According Korea Army Special Warfare Command commander Kwak Jong-keun,

Yoon had instructed his soldiers to “hurriedly destroy the door and drag out the lawmakers who are inside.” Kwak said that he disregarded Yoon’s directive.

Yoon is the third sitting South Korean president to be impeached. The nation’s first female president, Park Geun-hye,

Was impeached by parliament in 2016 due to a corruption scandal. She was removed from office and her impeachment was affirmed by the Constitutional Court.

President Roh Moo-hyun was impeached in parliament in 2004 for allegedly violating election laws, but the court eventually reversed the impeachment and gave him back his presidential authority.
