However, there’s one thing that all of the swimmers have in common—you may have seen the peculiar dark red rings on their backs.

Although the strange marks seem to indicate that they lost a battle with an octopus, there is really a whole other explanation.

It turns out that the huge blotches are the result of cupping treatment, an age-old medicinal method in which cups are applied to the skin to induce suction and improve blood flow.
