Triathlete criticizes authorities after accusing herself of seeing “things that we shouldn’t think about” in the Seine River during her Olympic swim

The Belgian triathlete Vermeylen recounted an incident during her 1500-meter swim in the Seine in which she came across floating garbage.

“While swimming under the bridge, I felt and saw things that we shouldn’t think about too much,” she remarked in an interview with the Flemish television station VTM.

Upon completing the race, the competitor could only pray that the swim had spared her from any illness.

Whether I’m ill or not, we’ll find out tomorrow, she added. Of course, it doesn’t have the same flavor as Sprite or Coca-Cola.

During her swim in the river, Vermeylen, who came in twenty-fourth position, claimed to have swallowed a large amount of water. In June, testing revealed E. coli levels that were 10 times higher than the permissible limit.
