When Kathy Bates loses to Anna Sawai, star of “Shogun,” she tears up her 2025 Golden Globes speech.

Emma D’Arcy (“House of the Dragon”), Keira Knightley (“Black Doves”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”), and Maya Erskine (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) were also in the category that Sawai, 32, won.

Russell, 48, was relieved that she was not the winner. She gave the individual seated next to her a mouthful of “thank you, oh thank you.” Sawai kindly acknowledged Bates throughout her address.

“I’ll make it brief, but I have a lot of people to thank. The crowd laughed when she remarked, “Thank you to the voters for voting for me even though I would vote for Kathy Bates any day.”

After the performance, Sawai told Entertainment Tonight that she wasn’t convinced she would win her category. “I was simply thinking how delighted.
