Dame and Tony Award winner Joan Plowright passes away at age 95.

“We are so proud of all Joan did and who she was as a loving and deeply inclusive human being,” added the statement.

Plowright recalled her performance as Beatie Bryant in the breakthrough stage play “Roots” (1959) and the lack of women in leading parts in the early 2000s in a 2018 BBC program.

At the time, Plowright told the BBC, “Beatie is the center of attention, the center of the story instead of being on the side, the decoration bit, the support.”
