Elon Musk’s Tesla is against a vehicle crash rule that Donald Trump’s transition team wants to remove.

 

That same year in which an Autopiloted Tesla struck a firetruck, killing the driver and injuring four firefighters were among the Tesla crashes that regulators looked into under the provision.

Such information is essential for assessing the safety of new automated-driving systems, according to a statement from the NHTSA.

According to two former agency workers, agency investigations into Tesla’s driver-assistance technologies, which resulted in 2023 recalls, relied heavily on the crash-reporting requirements.

They said that authorities would find it difficult to identify accident trends that point to safety issues without the data.

Since establishing the regulation in 2021, NHTSA said that it has received and examined data on over 2,700 accidents.

According to the agency, the information has impacted nine safety recalls involving four distinct corporations and ten investigations against six companies.
