Imane Khelif of Algeria was so overcome with passion after defeating Anna Luca Hamori of Hungary in the 66 kg quarterfinal boxing battle that she broke down in tears. This triumph followed a tumultuous few days.
After posting a contentious photo of a female boxer and a horned monster on Instagram on August 3, Hamori removed the picture.
Khelif, who was greeted with a rockstar-like ovation by her jubilant fans as she stepped into the ring, has been the target of ongoing criticism online due to the brevity of her victory against Angela Carini of Italy.
Khelif, a trailblazing female boxer from Algeria who competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in Tokyo,
has faced obstacles throughout her career, including a gender eligibility test that allegedly revealed increased testosterone levels, which disqualified her from last year’s Women’s World Championships.
